Mountain life, lived the traditional way

For centuries, the Berchtesgaden Alps—like all of Bavaria’s mountain regions—have been shaped by the grazing lands of mountain farmers: the alpine pastures, or “Almen”. To this day, you can experience many alpine pasture huts there, known as “Kaser”, still run in the traditional way during the roughly 100-day alpine summer.

Nowhere else in Bavaria will you find as many actively farmed and cultivated alpine pastures as in Berchtesgaden. But our Almen are more than just working farms—they’ve become some of the region’s most rewarding destinations. You can reach them on scenic hiking trails or by mountain bike.

And after a demanding climb or ride? Settle in at one of the many welcoming huts and refuel with a “Brotzeit,” a hearty alpine snack.

Tip: At some mountain huts, you’ll get to try traditional “Schüsselkas”—a hearty local cheese specialty you’ll only find in Berchtesgaden!

Alpine pastures in the Klausbach Valley

The valley of alpine pastures

The Klausbach Valley is one of the core valleys of Berchtesgaden National Park. It’s known not only as a valley of eagles and vultures, but also as a valley of alpine pastures. Just beyond the Klausbach Valley, on the Austrian side, you’ll find the Weißbach alpine pastures.
