Drive to an alpine pasture hut? Absolutely! Perched right along the legendary Rossfeld Panoramic Road, Obere Ahornalm is one of the few mountain huts you can reach by car. Settle in for a hearty alpine snack featuring homemade local specialties, then soak in sweeping views that stretch far into Austria.
Upper and Lower Ahornalm
Upper Ahornalm is located at the highest point of Rossfeld. On the alpine pasture, you’ll also find the Ahornkaser mountain restaurant, Germany’s highest roadside rest stop. Lower Ahornalm lies slightly below the ridge. It serves as a lower-altitude alpine pasture. This means that in early summer and fall, the alpine farmer’s animals graze on the lower-lying pasture. In midsummer, Upper Ahornalm is then used for grazing.
Rossfeld Panorama Road
Rossfeld Panorama Road —Germany’s highest toll road open year-round—takes you almost all the way to Ahornkaser. You’ll drive at an altitude of over 1,600 meters and enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden and Salzburg regions. A toll is required to drive the Rossfeld Panorama Road.
Ahornbüchsenkopf: an easy hike
Above Ahornalm rises the forested ridge of the Ahornbüchsenkopf. You can reach the 1,604-meter-high summit from Ahornalm, the Ahornkaser mountain restaurant, or the Rossfeld Panorama Road via an easy hiking trail. At the top, you’ll enjoy a fantastic view over the entire Berchtesgaden valley with its surrounding mountain ranges and into the Salzach Valley in Salzburg below Hoher Göll. On a clear day, the view extends all the way to Dachstein.
Mountain hikes from Ahornalm
