Berchtesgadener Land Biosphere Region
Model region for sustainable developmentUNESCO has designated Berchtesgadener Land as a biosphere region—and it’s the only biosphere reserve in Germany that combines both alpine and pre-alpine landscapes. The biosphere serves as a living, economic, and recreational space for people, while also being characterized by a particularly distinctive and intact natural and cultural landscape with a very high level of biological diversity.
The goal is to create a balanced coexistence between people and nature by promoting the region’s social and economic development in harmony with nature. In this context, people are the focus as the most important shapers and preservers of the landscape.
Together with everyone who lives, works, or visits the Berchtesgaden region, the aim is to develop a model region for sustainable development—for the benefit of current and future generations, and with a clear commitment to social, ecological, and economic responsibility.
