The new underground movie theater

Deep inside the mountain, state-of-the-art media technology combines with the fascinating history of “white gold” to create an impressive presentation in a unique atmosphere. The mountain’s natural structure provides a spectacular backdrop: Subtle lighting atmospherically highlights the rock salt layers, while a ceiling projection creates the impression of a seemingly endless tunnel.

Since June 2026, two state-of-the-art theaters with ample seating have immersed visitors in the world of salt. The film takes you on a journey through the formation of the Alps and explains the geological processes that trapped the salt inside the mountain. It also tells the story of Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, which has been in operation for over 500 years, and vividly illustrates the modern-day journey of the brine—from extraction in the mountain, through transport to Bad Reichenhall, all the way to processing into high-quality table salt.

The Magical Salt Room at Berchtesgaden Salt Mine

In the Magical Salt Room, a fascinating audiovisual presentation awaits you, surrounded by ethereal, crystalline sounds. The presentation depicts the miners’ daily work, the traditional Berchtesgaden Miners’ Guild, and the mine rescue team. Differences between the past and the present are illustrated through visual animations. A new exhibition at Kaiser Franz Sinkwerk uses modern media to show that salt is much more than just table salt for cooking and seasoning.

To make the underground experience accessible to visitors from around the world, the audio guide content has also been completely updated. Guests can now follow the tour in 17 different languages—while the tour guide narrates the content in German. The audio guides are included in the admission price and are distributed at the start of the guided tour on the mine train.

Active salt mining since 1517

Berchtesgaden Salt Mine looks back on an eventful history. It all began in 1517 with the breaking of ground for the Petersberg Tunnel. In 2017, Berchtesgaden Salt Mine celebrated with its guests 500 years of uninterrupted mining of “white gold,” the miners’ tireless work, the unique tradition, and the exciting technical developments.
