The visitor mine

Salt is still mined in the Berchtesgaden salt mine today, as it always has been in so-called sinkholes. Visitors to the salt mine learn the exact process of salt mining as they enter the mine. A 1,400-metre-long route is covered by the visitor train and takes visitors inside the salt mine. Those who want to ride along are of course dressed in the typical overalls. In addition to the miner's slide, the ride over the underground salt lake is also a highlight of the underground tour.

The magical salt room in the Berchtesgaden salt mine

A fascinating audiovisual production awaits you in the magical salt room, surrounded by spherical, crystalline sounds. The presentation shows the everyday work of the miners, the traditional Berchtesgaden miners' guild and the mine rescue team. Differences between then and now are illustrated by visual animations. A new production in the Kaiser Franz Sinkwerk uses modern media to show that salt is much more than just table salt for cooking and seasoning.

In order to make the underground experience accessible to guests from all over the world, the text of the audio guides has also been revised. Guests can now follow the tour in 17 different languages - while the tour guide explains the content in German. The audio guides are included in the admission price and are handed out at the start of the tour on the mine train.

Active salt mining since 1517

The Berchtesgaden salt mine looks back on an eventful history. It all began in 1517 with the excavation of the Petersberg tunnel. In 2017, the Berchtesgaden salt mine and its guests celebrated 500 years of uninterrupted mining of the white gold, the persistent work of the miners, the unique tradition and the exciting technical development.
