Deep beneath the surface, a different world awaits. The Berchtesgaden Salt Mine—one of Germany’s oldest active salt mines—has been in operation for over 500 years, when “white gold” brought great wealth to the region.

On a guided tour, you ride the mine train into the mountain, slide down long wooden chutes into deeper tunnels, and even cross an underground salt lake.
