The Berchtesgaden mountain guides know these mountains like the back of their hand. They’ll introduce you to the region’s natural wonders, share their knowledge along the way—and make sure you return safely to the valley at the end of your tour.

In 1881, 22 local guides founded the Berchtesgaden Mountain Guides Association—the oldest of its kind in Germany. It was these very guides who, in 1893, carried a 125-kilogram, 3.5-meter iron cross to the summit of the Watzmann’s Mittelspitze and erected it there.

The association has been home to some of the great figures of alpine history, including Johann Grill—better known as “Kederbacher”—the first to climb the legendary Watzmann East Face. In 2010, the Berchtesgaden Mountain Guides Association was re-established, continuing this proud tradition into the present day.
