Our mountains

Nine mountain ranges form a heart-shaped embrace around Berchtesgaden, separating Bavaria from Salzburger Land. If you’re into mountaineering, the Berchtesgaden Alps will inspire you: despite a long-standing alpine and tourism tradition, these mountains have preserved their raw, untouched character.

A major reason for this is Berchtesgaden National Park, established in 1978. It protects large parts of the range—ensuring that the region’s natural beauty and sense of wilderness remain intact to this day.

The Berchtesgaden Alps are made up of nine mountain ranges. Eight of them surround the Berchtesgaden valley, which is home to the five communities of Ramsau, Schönau am Königssee, Berchtesgaden, Bischofswiesen, and Marktschellenberg.

Also part of the Berchtesgaden Alps is Hochkönig—even though it lies entirely on Austrian territory. Rising to 2,941 meters, it is the highest peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps–and Matrashaus at its summit is the highest mountain hut in our mountains.
