Mountain huts

Shelters and refuges for mountaineers

Since the mid-19th century, as the Alps were gradually opened up as high-alpine destinations, the first shelter huts were built by alpine clubs. Today, these refuges are found throughout the Berchtesgaden Alps—they provide you with lodging and meals during multi-day hut-to-hut hikes.

Mountain huts serve as both starting points and stopovers for countless hikes and alpine tours, but often the ascent to the huts alone requires mountaineering skills and physical fitness.
