Kärlingerhaus is a popular overnight stop on the Große Reibn hut-to-hut route. Stay here while hiking in summer or ski touring through Steinernes Meer in winter. Together with Lake Funtensee, Kärlingerhaus forms a picturesque mountain hut and lake setting in Berchtesgaden National Park.
Located right on Lake Funtensee at 1,638 meters, Kärlingerhaus is an ideal starting point for mountain tours and hikes at Steinernes Meer above Lake Königssee. You can reach Kärlingerhaus via the Saugasse trail from Sankt Bartholomä, from Salet via the Sagereckersteig trail, or from Ramsau via Wimbachgries and Trischübel. Because of its location above the lake, Kärlingerhaus is also called Funtenseehaus.
Funtensee—Germany’s coldest spot
In December 2001, the lowest temperature ever recorded in Germany was measured at Funtensee: minus 45.9 degrees Celsius. These low temperatures are due to the lake’s geological setting and are only a temporary phenomenon. Most of the time, temperatures up here are normal.
Summit hikes from Funtensee
From Kärlingerhaus, you can set out for numerous peaks, such as Feldkogel, Funtenseetauern, Schönfeldspitze, Viehkogel, or Großer Hundstod via Ingolstädter Haus.
