The Lattengebirge mountain range

The northern edge of the Berchtesgaden Alps

Stretching between the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall, Bayerisch Gmain, and Berchtesgaden, the Lattengebirge may be less well known than its famous neighbors, Watzmann and Untersberg—but it has a character all its own. The striking Rotofentürme dominate the range, forming the silhouette of Schlafende Hexe, the “Sleeping Witch”, complete with its distinctive Montgelas Nose.

Here, you’ll find traditional alpine pastures alongside a true historic highlight: the Predigtstuhlbahn cable car. The oldest large-cabin cable car still preserved in its original form carries you from Bad Reichenhall up to Predigtstuhl—the northwestern summit of the Lattengebirge.

Legendary Lattengebirge

Steinerne Agnes and the Rotofen Towers are the most striking landmarks in the otherwise gentle Lattengebirge mountain range: a rock tower shaped like a stone figure and the profile of a sleeping witch. No wonder myths and legends still surround both places to this day.
