From the Wachterl hiking parking lot, follow Alte Reichenhaller Straße into the forest. A wide trail soon takes you to the northern shore of Taubensee. From here, enjoy beautiful views across the lake to Hochkalter and its small Blaueis Glacier.
After passing beneath the B305, follow the paved road uphill to the right, then follow the clearly marked signs toward Mordautal/Mordau. At a fork, leave the paved road to the left and climb through the forest. After a steep ascent, you’ll reach Mordaualm, an alpine pasture. From here, follow the signs to the left toward Lattenbergalm and Moosenalm. If you’d like to stop at the staffed alpine hut for food and refreshments, continue straight ahead for a short distance.
Follow the trail toward Lattenbergalm and Moosenalm uphill toward the forest, then turn right and continue along the forest edge. At the edge of the forest, turn left—you’ll recognize the spot by the Almerlebnisweg information panel titled “Niederleger-Mitterleger-Hochleger.” You’ll also see a red-white-red trail marker from the German Alpine Club.
Follow Almerlebnisweg as far as Moosenalm. You’ll then climb a very steep, rocky trail where surefootedness is essential. Because of this section, we recommend hiking the loop counterclockwise. After the strenuous climb, you’ll reach a beautiful clearing at Karschneid, at an elevation of 1,530 meters.
Continue to Lattenbergalm, an unstaffed alpine pasture in a particularly scenic setting. Unlike alpine pastures at lower elevations, the high-elevation pastures of the Berchtesgaden region are relatively small. From here, descend toward the forest edge, where you’ll see a trail leading into the woods. A signpost points the way to Moosenalm.
The trail now leads through an especially beautiful stretch of forest with lush, wild vegetation and striking orange-colored rock. Leave the main trail on a path branching off to the right and follow the signs to Moosenalm. You’ll soon reach the alpine pasture, passing another Almerlebnisweg information panel and a particularly scenic rest area. From here, take the trail that turns sharply left toward Wachterl.
Before continuing, you can stop for food and refreshments at either of the two staffed alpine huts at Moosenalm. The hut on the left is especially rustic: to reach the counter, you actually walk right through the stable!
Finally, follow a forest road downhill toward Wachterl. Soon, a beautiful trail with scenic views takes you farther down the mountain. Later, you’ll rejoin a forest road and keep left. Pass a quarry and continue to the B305. Cross the road, then turn left and return to the parking lot.
