Hagengebirge mountain range

An untouched piece of nature

High above Lake Königssee, a place of near-total wilderness awaits you: the Hagengebirge mountain range. You won’t find cable cars here—or groomed ski slopes. Reaching mountain huts often means hours on foot.

But what you gain is something rare: a raw and remarkable alpine world.

Discover rare plants and wildlife, and watch chamois and ibex roam in peaceful silence.

Lake Seeleinsee

At an elevation of 1,809 meters in the Hagengebirge mountain range, you’ll discover Lake Seeleinsee—a small alpine lake once known as Schlugsee. The famous Kleine Reibn and Große Reibn routes pass right by this roughly 100-meter-long lake. If you’re touring the huts around Königssee, you’ll come across it on the stretch between Schneibstein and Röth. But Seeleinsee is just as rewarding as the destination of a day hike.

Alpine pastures & mountain huts in the Hagengebirge

Once, numerous alpine pastures shaped the high plateaus of the Hagengebirge—today, most have been abandoned. One notable exception is Gotzenalm on the western edge of the range. Here, you’ll find traditionally managed alpine huts, hearty regional cuisine, and a welcoming mountain inn.

Below the slopes of Fagstein, Priesbergalm welcomes you. On a mountain hike through the Hagengebirge, you’ll also pass by abandoned alpine pastures, such as the remains of the former Schlummalm at Seeleinsee.

You can spend the night not only at Gotzenalm, but also at Carl-von-Stahl-Haus at Torrener Joch or at Schneibsteinhaus—both relatively easy to reach from Mount Jenner. Between the Hagengebirge and the neighboring Steinernes Meer lies the Wasseralm, a German Alpine Club hut perched high above Lake Obersee in the Röth area.

And because the Hagengebirge mountain range is so remote, these huts become more than just stops along the way—they’re your safe havens and well-earned breaks on longer hikes.
