Stahlhaus at Torrener Joch

Carl-von-Stahl-Haus is a key base in northern Hagengebirge and lies along two classic Berchtesgaden routes, the Kleine Reibn and Große Reibn. This Austrian Alpine Club hut is open year-round, making it a popular base for ski mountaineers as well.

Carl-von-Stahl-Haus (Stahlhaus) is operated by the Salzburg Section of the Austrian Alpine Club. Located at Torrener Joch near Jenner, the hut sits at an elevation of 1,736 meters between Hagengebirge and the Hoher Göll massif. The border between Bavaria and the Austrian state of Salzburg runs right through this area.

Easy to reach: Stahlhaus

You can reach Stahlhaus via various trails without a long approach. This makes it an ideal destination for hikes and day trips, as well as a starting point for longer mountain tours. One particularly popular option is to hike to Stahlhaus after riding the Jennerbahn up the mountain.

Dogs are welcome at the hut

Stahlhaus offers both beds and shared dormitory accommodations. You can find current overnight rates in the online reservation system. Dogs are also welcome at Stahlhaus with advance notice, and special dog-friendly rooms are available. Dogs stay at the hut free of charge. Call the hut for details.

Popular with ski tourers and hikers

Stahlhaus is open even in winter. From Jenner, you can reach the hut on touring skis or snowshoes along a route that is usually well tracked. From here, you can set out on numerous ski tours in the Berchtesgaden Alps, including Schneibstein and the Kleine Reibn, or tackle the Große Reibn, a challenging multi-day ski traverse to Kärlingerhaus followed by a final descent into Wimbachtal.

In summer, Schneibstein is a particularly popular destination for hikers and mountaineers setting out from Stahlhaus. At 2,276 meters, this peak in Hagengebirge is considered the easiest 2,000-meter peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps.
