Moosenalm sits on a scenic high plateau in the Lattengebirge mountains. Together with Mordau and Lattenbergalm, it’s one of the highlights along the Almerlebnisweg Ramsau, a trail that leads you through the region’s rich alpine heritage. During the summer months, you can stop by the two staffed alpine huts, savor regional specialties, and soak up the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

The Rundum-Kaser at Moosenalm

The historic Rundum-Kaser, dating from the early 19th century, is one of the very few remaining and actively operated huts of this design in Berchtesgaden. As the original form of alpine hut construction, it brings people and animals together under one roof, thereby preserving an important part of alpine cultural heritage.

The simple log structure, built of spruce and fir, was erected without nails and is covered with a gently sloping shingle roof made of split larch shingles, weighted down with stones to withstand storms and snow. The centerpiece of the interior is the original smoke kitchen with an open hearth and a historic copper kettle, which is still used today for cheese-making.

Saved from ruin in the 1980s, the Rundum-Kaser was restored with great respect for traditional building methods. To this day, Moosenalm is still farmed during the summer months, keeping the centuries-old tradition of alpine farming alive. Simple, authentic, and far removed from modern comforts.

Hiking trails to Moosenalm

From Wachterl, the old salt-traders’ pass in the mountaineering village of Ramsau, several trails lead to Moosenalm. The standard route takes you via the Pioniersteig on the marked Alpine Club Trail 470 to the hut in about one hour and 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can ascend to Moosenalm or Anthauptenalm via the Prechlsteig trail. Although this route is slightly longer than the standard trail, it allows you to avoid the descent over the coarse gravel of the Pioniersteig.

The most popular route to Moosenalm follows the Almerlebnisweg Ramsau. Your hike begins at Taubensee and first takes you to Mordaualm. From there, you continue over the Karschneid to Lattenbergalm and finally to Moosenalm. For the return hike, take the trail to Wachterl and hike past Taubensee back to the starting point.

Mountain biking to Moosenalm

The mountain bike ride to Moosenalm challenges your legs and rewards you with a relaxing break at the alpine pasture hut. From Bad Reichenhall, you’ll cycle past Saalachsee and along the Röthelbach forest road, passing Dalsenalm before reaching Moosenalm. If you’re not quite done yet, you can extend your ride with the climb to Anthauptenalm.
