Located on a peaceful high plateau in the Lattengebirge mountains, Anthauptenalm is still a working alpine pasture today. Whether you hike or ride by mountain bike, you can reach this secluded mountain pasture from Wachterl or Baumgarten. From there, it's also worth taking a short detour to Schneizlreuther Vogelspitz for even more spectacular views.

Anthauptenalm lies secluded and peaceful on a high plateau in the Lattengebirge mountains. Only a few hikers and mountain bikers make their way up to Anthaupten, even though the alpine pasture can be reached relatively quickly from Wachterl in the mountaineering village of Ramsau or from Baumgarten via the Röthelbach forest road near the Alpine town of Bad Reichenhall. Locals also call it the Landhauptenalm.

Two alpine huts and a forestry cabin

On the plateau of Anthauptenalm, you’ll discover two alpine huts used for farming—known as Kaser—as well as a forest service hut. The pastureland is surrounded on all sides by forest and crisscrossed by dolines—funnel-shaped depressions. The alpine pasture was first mentioned as early as 1385 and remains an active working alpine pasture today. After the historic Eggler Kaser burned down in the 1960s, it was partially rebuilt in stone—an uncommon feature for a traditional alpine hut in the Berchtesgaden region. Anthauptenalm is a high alpine pasture, meaning it is grazed only during the height of summer. In early summer and again in late summer, the livestock spend the season on the lower-lying Schwarzbachalm before returning to the high pasture.

Mountain biking to Anthauptenalm

You can also reach Anthauptenalm by mountain bike on a well-maintained trail. The mountain bike route from Bad Reichenhall to Anthauptenalm is particularly popular. It first takes you along the Saalachtal Bike Trail (white “S” with a wave on a red background) from Luitpold Bridge in Bad Reichenhall to Unterjettenberg. Soon you’ll reach Schwarzbachalm, nestled in a shady valley. From there to Wachterl, the route becomes a bit more challenging. Then it’s a moderately steep climb up to Anthauptenalm. After a relaxing break, a daring descent awaits you on the lower section along the Röthelbach forest road to Baumgarten—caution is advised here! You’ll then ride back to Luitpold Bridge via the Saalachtal Bike Trail.

You can reach the neighboring Moosenalm from Anthauptenalm via several hiking trails. On a mountain bike, you’ll first have to ride downhill for quite a while and then back uphill to reach Moosenalm.

Hiking tip: Take the detour to Schneizlreuther Vogelspitz

While you're at Anthauptenalm, don't miss the short detour to Schneizlreuther Vogelspitz. Anthauptenalm offers only limited views, but from the summit of this modest peak, you'll enjoy sweeping vistas across Salzburg's Saalach Valley. On a clear day, you can even see as far as the Wilder Kaiser mountain range.
