Mountain and alpine trails

Watzmann traverse and beyond

Alpine trails are long, demanding high-alpine tours that blend elements of mountain hiking and via ferratas. They also lead through exposed, unsecured sections with climbing passages in grades I and II. You’ll need your hands to move forward—already stepping into the first level of rock climbing, in terrain where some sections are not secured. That means you need more than sure-footedness and experience: strong endurance is essential.

Here, we showcase three standout alpine routes: the traverses of the three highest massifs surrounding the Berchtesgaden valley—Hoher Göll, Hochkalter, and of course the Watzmann traverse. Given their length and elevation, one rule applies: only plan and start these routes in completely stable and reliable weather conditions.

Routes like the Rinnkendlsteig and the Thomas-Eder-Steig on the Untersberg, as well as the climb to the Schärtenspitze, mark the transition from classic hikes to via ferratas. In more exposed sections—or where you’ll need your hands to progress—they’re equipped with ropes or footholds. These may cover just a few meters or extend across longer stretches. The ropes typically serve as handrails or climbing aids rather than continuous safety systems. If you’re sure-footed and comfortable with exposure, you can generally tackle these routes without full via ferrata gear.

Alpine Information Service

You’ll want to answer a few key questions before you set out—about current weather conditions, trail status, or places to stop along the way. That’s exactly what the Berchtesgaden Alpine Information Service is here for. From Monday to Friday, between 4 and 6 pm, experienced alpine advisors take the time to personally answer your questions.
