Rossfeld Panorama Road

An unforgettable adventure at 1,600 meters
  • Open at all times
  • Berchtesgaden

Experience Germany's highest toll road with its panoramic views, numerous curves, and places to stop for a break. Whether by car, motorcycle, or mountain bike—an impressive panoramic view awaits you at the summit.

You won’t soon forget the drive along Germany’s highest toll road with panoramic views. The road takes you up to an elevation of 1,600 meters. Along the summit section—which runs partly across a high plateau in Austrian territory—you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Berchtesgaden and Salzburg regions.

Rossfeldstraße

Discover the impressive Berchtesgaden Alpine landscape along Rossfeld Panorama Road and enjoy the view down into the Salzach Valley—more than 1,000 meters below—with the city of Salzburg, home of Mozart. You can easily reach the panoramic road by car or bus; it’s also a popular destination for motorcyclists. Formerly known as Roßfeld-Höhenringstraße, the panoramic road is accessible via two access roads.

  • The southern access road leads from Klaushöhe on the Obersalzberg via the South Toll Booth to Ofnerboden. This is the starting point for the hike to the Eagle's Nest. Passing the distillery hut of Enzianbrennerei Grassl below Eckersattel and Untere Ahornalm, the road climbs uphill to Obere Ahornalm below Ahornbüchsenkopf (1,604 meters), the highest point on Rossfeld. The first very sharp right-hand turn between Untere and Obere Ahornalm is known as “Regerkurve”, named after a German rally driver. Immediately after that, Rossfeld Panorama Road reaches its steepest incline.
  • The northern ascent begins in Berchtesgaden-Oberau and leads through the neighborhoods of Gmerk, Dora, and Heißbäck, past Madlerlehen and Pechhäusl, to the northern toll booth. The road winds through the Rossfeldalm area up to the parking lot at Hennenköpfl. In winter, this part of Rossfeld serves as a ski area; thanks to its high elevation, it is the ski area in Bavaria with the most reliable natural snow conditions.

The summit section of Rossfeld Panorama Road connects the southern and northern access roads on a high plateau with almost no inclines. It runs east of Hennenkamm, which marks the national border. For a distance of about 1.5 kilometers, Rossfeldstraße runs through Austrian territory.

View of the Berchtesgaden Alps

You’ll find several parking lots along the highest section of the road. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the majestic Hoher Göll massif, Kehlstein, the Tennen and Dachstein mountains, Untersberg, as well as the Berchtesgaden and Salzburg regions. The panoramic road is also an ideal starting point for mountain hikes, including those to Purtschellerhaus (1,692 meters) or the Eagle's Nest (1,834 meters).

Rossfeld Family Ski Resort

In winter, Rossfeld offers what is arguably the most reliable family ski resort in the Berchtesgadener Land region, with guaranteed natural snow. Three T-bar lifts and two practice lifts take you to perfectly groomed alpine runs and a separate snowboard run. The six-kilometer ski run leads down to Oberau, from where an RVO shuttle bus takes you back to Rossfeld. The ski touring route up to Rossfeld is also a popular route for beginners.

The End of the German Alpine Road

The road’s construction history is also interesting: Construction began in 1938 under the supervision of the German Alpine Road project management—it was intended to form the final loop of the German Alpine Road. The road was also presumably intended to give visitors a view—from a safe distance—of the high-security area of the Obersalzberg—which had served as the second seat of government alongside Berlin since 1933—and which had been closed to the public since 1937. It was not until after the end of the war that the road was completed by the Traunstein Road Construction Office.

Scenic Tip
