Located at Rossfeld Panorama Road, you'll find Rossfeldalm, a communal alpine pasture run by 21 farmers from Oberau and Scheffau
In winter, skiers carve their turns in a small ski area with natural snow; during the alpine summer, cows and young cattle graze there. The cows’ milk is turned into cheese right on the alpine pasture, which you can savor as part of a traditional alpine snack.
An Alpine Pasture with a Long History
The Rossfeld was first mentioned in historical records as an alpine pasture as early as 1885. In 1850, nine farmers drove more than 150 head of cattle up to the alpine pasture. Until 1942, three alpine farmers held the rights to manage the pasture; during the Third Reich, these farmers were forced to leave. During the Nazi era, the Rossfeld was used as a horse pasture. After World War II and the end of the regime, the pasture was taken over by the municipality of Oberau and came under the ownership of the Bavarian State Forests. Since 2005, the “Rossfeld Pasture Cooperative” has leased Rossfeldalm. Of the 21 farmers in the cooperative, 18 drive their cattle up to the pasture during the summer months.
