Nestled in the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park at the end of the Klausbachtal valley, Bindalm is one of the region’s most popular alpine pastures. Whether you arrive on foot, by mountain bike, or aboard the ALMErlebnisBUS, you'll discover traditional alpine farming, welcoming alpine pasture huts, and spectacular natural scenery.
Located at the end of the Klausbachtal valley—also known as the Valley of the Eagles—Bindalm sits just below historic Hirschbichl Pass and Gasthaus Hirschbichl on the German-Austrian border. In the heart of Berchtesgaden National Park, you'll experience a landscape where nature is free to thrive while traditional alpine farming continues to this day.
Two welcoming alpine pasture huts at Bindalm
Bindalm is home to four traditional alpine huts, known locally as Kaser. Two of them welcome visitors, serving homemade specialties such as fresh butter and cheese, along with refreshing drinks.
The alpine grazing area of Bindalm also includes Mittereisalm, where young cattle spend the summer months. Another local specialty is Schüsslkas, a traditional cheese still made at Bindalm and found only in the southern part of the Berchtesgaden region.
The historic Rundumkaser at Bindalm
One of the two non-operating huts at Bindalm is the Schied-Kaser, a Rundumkaser preserved by Berchtesgaden National Park. This distinctive circular-style alpine hut was once common throughout the region but is no longer used in its original form. Today, it is recognized as a cultural monument of exceptional historic importance.
The Schied-Kaser originally stood on Feldalm near Funtensee, where it remained in use until 1960. After the alpine pasture was abandoned, the national park dismantled the hut, transported each piece by helicopter, and carefully rebuilt it at its present location. Today, it forms part of a protected ensemble of historic alpine huts at Bindalm.
Hiking to Bindalm
Bindalm is one of the most popular hiking destinations in the Klausbachtal valley, one of the main valleys of the Berchtesgaden National Park. From Klausbachhaus—the Berchtesgaden National Park information point at Hintersee in the mountaineering village of Ramsau—you can reach the alpine pasture in about two to two and a half hours. The starting point is located about 15 kilometers from Berchtesgaden.
Along the way, you’ll pass the wildlife feeding station and the suspension bridge in the Klausbachtal valley. A short detour takes you to Ragertalm. From Bindalm, it’s not far to the Alpengasthof Hirschbichl inn on the German-Austrian border—or you can continue hiking to the Litzlalm.
Mountain biking or e-biking to Bindalm
You can also easily reach Bindalm by mountain bike or e-bike. From Hintersee, follow the road through the Klausbachtal valley. Shortly after the steep Mitterberg section, the alpine trail to Bindalm branches off and leads you straight up.
Bindalm is also a great spot to take a break on the mountain bike tour to Litzlalm, Kallbrunnalm, or on the loop around the Reiter Alm mountain massif.
Please note: Cycling beyond this point on the hiking trail to Hirschbichl is not permitted.
Take the ALMErlebnisBUS to the Klausbachtal valley
You can also take the ALMErlebnisBUS to Bindalm or Hirschbichl stop; from there, it’s just a few minutes’ walk. The bus runs from May through October.
