From one mountaineering village to the next: Following in the footsteps of the salt caravans, you’ll hike along the historic salt trade route from Hintersee in the mountaineering village of Ramsau through the Valley of Eagles and Alpine Pastures. Via Bindalm and the Hirschbichl Pass, you’ll reach the mountaineering village of Weißbach in Austria.

This hike takes you in the footsteps of the salt carriers along the historic salt trade route through the Klausbach valley, over the Hirschbichl Pass, and on to Weißbach in Austria. The route was once a major transportation corridor: for centuries, salt was transported from Berchtesgaden to the Pinzgau region using pack animals. Today, Klausbachtal is one of the most popular hiking areas in Berchtesgaden National Park and in the mountaineering village of Ramsau.

The ALMErlebnisBUS runs along the route between the two mountaineering villages of Ramsau and Weißbach. Taking the bus makes this tour much easier. Thanks to its stops along the route, you can plan your hike exactly as you like.

Directions

In the Klausbach valley, hikers and mountain bikers share the trails. From the parking lot at Klausbachhaus, follow marked Alpine Club trail no. 481 alongside Klausbach stream as it climbs gently through the valley. At first, the route alternates between open pastures and light mixed forest. Farther on, the trail climbs more steeply through dense coniferous forest, passing countless springs and crossing lively mountain streams along the way.

Continue past the suspension bridge beneath the towering rock faces of the Ramsau Dolomites and on to Bindalm. The picturesque alpine huts are protected historic buildings, and the views of Reiter Alm are spectacular. From here, it’s just a short walk to the border crossing at Hirschbichl and Gasthof Hirschbichl.

Stop at Gasthof Hirschbichl for some well-earned food and refreshments before continuing to the Austrian village of Weißbach. For the return trip, you can take the ALMErlebnisBUS.
