Permanent exhibition in a historic farmhouse

Originally an old farmhouse, the Klausbachhaus is now the visitor center for Berchtesgaden National Park, located at the entrance to the Klausbach Valley—the valley of eagles and alpine pastures

Located at the entrance to the Klausbach Valley is the “Klausbachhaus,” as the Berchtesgaden National Park information center is also known. This historic farmhouse houses the interactive permanent exhibition “1,000 Years of Ups and Downs,” which explores the theme of alpine pastures, across two floors. What was alpine life like in the past, what is it like today, and what makes this habitat so unique for people, animals, and plants? You’ll find the answers in a fun and engaging way. Stop by!

History of the Klausbachhaus

Originally, the Klausbachhaus was the residence of the Laros fief, a Berchtesgaden farmstead in Unterau. It took on its current form in 1757, but in the second half of the 20th century, it was increasingly left to decay: After the building was donated to the Berchtesgaden National Park in 1992, preparations began for the relocation of the historic building. The upper floor, constructed of wood, was dismantled beam by beam, and the stone walls on the ground floor, stone by stone. Each part was numbered, and the house was reassembled at its new location true to the original. Following the successful reconstruction, the opening of the Berchtesgaden National Park information center—now known as the Klausbachhaus—was celebrated on July 1, 1995.

Exhibitions at the Klausbachhaus

  • Exhibition: 1,000 Years of Ups and Downs: “1,000 Years of Ups and Downs”—this title highlights the long tradition of alpine farming and its significance for the protected area, while also emphasizing the never-ending migration of alpine herders and their animals from the valley to the alpine pastures and back. Alpine pastures are of great importance to the National Park; they are a typical habitat with an exceptionally high level of biodiversity.
  • Ground Floor: Among other things, the following topics are presented here: alpine pastures in the National Park, humans as shapers of the alpine pastures, and old breeds of livestock. A former alpine farmer tells you what life on the alpine pastures was like in the past.
  • Upper Floor: The second part of the exhibition is dedicated to biodiversity: small creatures on the pastures, typical alpine plants, and crepuscular animals, and explores the question of how humans influence this biodiversity. You’ll also learn what the “King of the Skies,” the golden eagle, has to do with alpine pastures and how the landscape has changed over the decades. At the end of your tour, you can enjoy an impressive film about alpine pastures throughout the seasons (12 min).

On the grounds of the Klausbachhaus, you’ll also find a traditional farm garden as well as a “sensory garden” with a barefoot trail, sound stations, and much more.
The information center is the starting point for many hiking tours in the national park; a barrier-free loop trail also begins here. The Klausbachhaus itself is not barrier-free, but there are accessible restroom facilities in the garden of the information center.

Starting point for hikes into the Valley of Eagles and Vultures

The Klausbachhaus is the starting point for numerous tours. From here, you can mountain bike to the Litzlalm or Kallbrunnalm; other alpine pastures, such as the Bindalm or the Ragertalm, can be reached on foot from here. The Almerlebnisbus also departs from here, taking passengers up to the Hirschbichl and on to the mountaineering village of Weißbach on the Austrian side.

No matter how you explore the Klausbach Valley, you should always keep your eyes open and look up at the sky from time to time: The Klausbach Valley is not only a golden eagle habitat; since 2021, bearded vultures have been released into the wild here.
