The suspension bridge in the Klausbachtal valley

Accessible suspension bridge in Berchtesgaden National Park

On the hiking trail through the Klausbachtal valley, a 55-meter-long, wheelchair-accessible suspension bridge awaits you. Spanning high above the Klausbach stream, it’s a spectacular section of the trail from Hintersee to Hirschbichl and offers you a truly special experience of nature.

In 1999, the entire summit structure of Kleines Mühlsturzhorn collapsed, and 250,000 cubic meters of rock thundered down into the Klausbachtal valley. Hiking trails, the Hirschbichl road, and the old bridges were buried under masses of debris and dust. Klausbachtal resembled a lunar landscape. The destruction of the bridge over the Klausbach stream cut off the hiking trail to Hirschbichl.

Where floods, rockfalls, and avalanches once swept away the old bridge time and again, a remarkable new landmark has welcomed visitors since 2010: a suspension bridge stretching 55 meters in length and rising 11 meters above the creek. It reconnects the hiking trail—and transforms the crossing itself into one of the most memorable moments of your adventure through Klausbach Valley.

Accessible Trails in Berchtesgaden National Park

The Klausbach Valley offers several accessible hiking trails. Trails ranging from two to four kilometers in length lead you to the wildlife feeding area with its wheelchair-accessible viewing platform.

If you’d like to go a bit further, a roughly 6-kilometer trail (with gradients of 6 to 10% in some sections) will take you to the accessible suspension bridge—the only one of its kind in the Alps.

If this route is too challenging for you, the public ALMErlebnisBUS will take you comfortably through the valley in the summer. The low-floor bus stops at several stations—for example, at the suspension bridge, the Bindalm, or the Hirschbichl Pass.

Hike to the suspension bridge

You’ll start at Klausbachhaus, the National Park information point at Hintersee, and hike past the Lahnwald ranger station to the suspension bridge. For the return trip, you can either take the same route or the paved road, which is closed to public traffic.
