The Halsalm awaits you in the Klausbachtal valley in Berchtesgaden National Park. Thanks to its location above Lake Hintersee, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the lake and the Ramsau valley.

In the Valley of the Eagles: Halsalm

Perched above Klausbach Valley in Ramsau, Halsalm is an easy hike from the National Park information point at Klausbachhaus. Treat yourself to homemade local specialties while enjoying sweeping views of the Hintersee area. Klausbach Valley is also known as the Valley of the Eagles—and with good reason. Several pairs of golden eagles nest in the cliffs around Halsalm.

Routes to Halsalm

Two trails lead to Halsalm. From Klausbachhaus, follow the paved road for the first few hundred meters, then turn right onto a fairly steep gravel trail. Alternatively, you can start at the Fernsebner parking area and hike up to Halsalm along the southern slopes of Reiter Alm. Combine both routes for a scenic loop hike with ever-changing views.

Lacklehen: Traditional alpine farming in Ramsau

Halsalm is managed by the farming family from Lacklehen in Ramsau. Each year, from mid- to late May, the cattle are driven up to the alpine pasture, where they spend the summer under the care of a Sennerin, the traditional alpine herder.

Alpine summer in Berchtesgaden

The tradition of alpine farming

The romantic image of life on an alpine pasture rarely reflects reality. Working on an alpine pasture is demanding, and the days are long.

  • Intangible Cultural Heritage

Alpine farming plays an outstanding role in Berchtesgaden — economically, culturally, and in shaping the landscape. With its official inclusion in Bavaria’s register of Intangible Cultural Heritage, this unique form of land stewardship is now also recognized at the political level.
  • Cattle drive in Berchtesgaden

During Almabtrieb in Berchtesgaden, decorated cattle return from the mountain pastures to the valley as villages celebrate Alpine customs and Bavarian heritage.
