Große Reibn

The loop described here is based on the “Große Reibn,” a classic route well known among ski mountaineers. For summer hut-to-hut hiking, the route has been adapted to the hiking trail network. As you hike through the western Hagengebirge and Steinernes Meer, you’ll experience some of the most spectacular scenery in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The route combines straightforward mountain trails and paths with more challenging alpine crossings. Much of the hike also takes you through the core zone of Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany’s only Alpine national park. One of the most impressive sections leads across the vast central plateau of Steinernes Meer.

The German Alpine Club recommends completing this hike in six daily stages:

• Königssee - Stahlhaus: Take the Jennerbahn cable car up the mountain, then follow Trail 499 to Stahlhaus, 1.5 hours (arrival day).
• Stahlhaus - Wasseralm: Follow Trail 416 from Torrener Joch up to Schneibstein, then descend across the plateau to Seeleinsee. Cross Hochgschirr into Landtal and continue from Unteres Landtal via Reitsteig—with one short secured section—to Wasseralm, 6 hours.
• Wasseralm - Kärlingerhaus: Follow Trail 416 from Wasseralm via Halsköpfl, Schwarzsee, and Grünsee to Funtensee and Kärlingerhaus, 4.5 hours.
• Kärlingerhaus - Riemannhaus: Follow Trail 413 from Kärlingerhaus via Baumgartl and Salzburger Kreuz to Riemannhaus, 3 hours.
• Riemannhaus - Ingolstädterhaus: Follow Trail 401 from Riemannhaus via Eichstätter Weg to Ingolstädterhaus, 2.5–3 hours (section of long-distance hiking trail 4alpin).
• Ingolstädterhaus - Wimbachbrücke in Ramsau: Follow Trail 411 from Ingolstädterhaus via Hundstodgatterl and Trischübelpass to Wimbachgrieshütte, 4.5 hours. From Wimbachgrieshütte, continue through Wimbachtal to Wimbachbrücke, 2.5 hours.
