Wimbachgrieshütte is located at the head of Wimbachtal, right beside the vast scree fields of Wimbachgries. The mountain hut is operated by the NaturFreunde association and offers hikers and mountaineers a welcoming place to rest and spend the night. It is also a popular base for multi-day hikes and for mountaineers completing the Watzmann traverse.
Wimbachgrieshütte lies at an elevation of 1,327 meters, almost at the end of the Wimbachtal valley. At the head of Wimbachgries, Watzmann to the east, Hochkalter to the west, and the sheer slopes of Großer Hundstod to the south create an impressive mountain backdrop.
Hike to Wimbachgrieshütte
You can reach Wimbachgrieshütte from Wimbachbrücke in the mountaineering village of Ramsau via Alpine Club Trails 641 and 642 on a long but relatively easy hike. The route follows the vast scree fields of Wimbachgries throughout. You can either hike through the Wimbachklamm gorge or take the trail above the gorge before climbing gradually between the steep rock faces of Watzmann and Hochkalter to the hut at an elevation of 1,327 meters.
Wimbachgrieshütte as a base
Nearby Trischübel Pass, with routes leading to Kärlingerhaus, Riemannhaus, and Ingolstädter Haus near Hundstod, makes Wimbachgrieshütte an ideal base for multi-day hikes. After a Watzmann traverse, Wimbachgrieshütte is also an ideal place to spend the night if you can no longer make it back to Ramsau the same day.
History of Wimbachgrieshütte
In 1919, the NaturFreunde München association leased the “Griesalm,” also known as “Windachütte,” from the Free State of Bavaria. A hut had stood on the site of today’s Wimbachgrieshütte since around 1546. NaturFreunde converted it into simple accommodations for up to 20 mountaineers. Between 1922 and 1924, a new and larger building was constructed. Following numerous improvements and renovations, Wimbachgrieshütte took on its present form during another major renovation in 1954 and 1955. The most recent extensive renovations were completed in 2001, with environmentally responsible upgrades to the energy and water supply, drinking water treatment, and wastewater disposal systems.
