Wimbachschloss
Former hunting lodge of Prince Regent Luitpold- Open today
- Ramsau
You'll find the former Wittelsbach hunting lodge next to the mighty scree flow of the Wimbachgries in the valley of the same name. A visit combines perfectly with a hike through the Wimbachklamm gorge.
Wimbachschloss stands at an elevation of 937 meters in Wimbachgries, the vast stream of scree that stretches westward from Trischübelpass between Watzmann, Hochkalter, and Steinernes Meer. From Wimbachbrücke in the mountaineering village of Ramsau, you can reach Wimbachschloss on a pleasant hike of about two hours.
History of Wimbachschloss
Wimbachschloss was built in 1784 by Joseph Conrad von Schroffenberg, the last Prince-Provost of Berchtesgaden. Beginning in 1810, the new rulers, the Wittelsbach family, used it as a hunting lodge. King Max II and Prince Regent Luitpold in particular valued Wimbachtal as a hunting ground and held royal hunts here. In May 2019, Petra Palt and Alexander Unger took over the operation of Wimbachschloss.
Hike to Wimbachschloss
From Wimbachbrücke, follow Alpine Club Trail 641 on a relatively level hike to Wimbachschloss. Near the beginning of the trail, you’ll discover the thundering Wimbachklamm gorge, an impressive ravine you can explore on walkways and bridges. From Wimbachschloss, the trail continues to Wimbachgrieshütte and on into the high-alpine terrain of the Berchtesgaden mountains.
