This hike is not for the faint of heart: The ascent via Schaflsteig is very challenging, but the scenery is spectacular.

From Hintersee in Ramsau, you hike through the Klausbachtal valley to Engertalm before climbing via Schaflsteig to Mayrbergscharte. Continue through Steinbergasse and across the Reiter Alm high plateau to Neue Traunsteiner Hütte. Descend to Ramsau via Wachterlsteig, then hike past Taubensee back to Hintersee.

Directions

From the Hintersee parking lot in the mountaineering village of Ramsau, you hike into Klausbachtal. Follow the mostly level trail through the forest to Engertalm. Here, the steep Schaflsteig trail branches off. Schaflsteig is a very challenging alpine trail, with the final section secured much like a via ferrata. The route leads through spectacular scenery beneath the imposing southern faces of the Mühlsturzhörner to Mayrbergscharte.

From Mayrbergscharte, a climb to Stadelhorn or Wagendrischelhorn makes a rewarding detour. There are several routes to Neue Traunsteiner Hütte, including Rossgasse and Steinberggasse. Both are challenging high-altitude trails. Whichever route you choose, you’ll reach the alpine meadows on the high plateau of Reiter Alm after about two hours. Neue Traunsteiner Hütte lies at the eastern end of the plateau.

From Neue Traunsteiner Hütte, you can descend either via Schrecksattel to Oberjettenberg or via Wachterlsteig to Ramsau. If you descend to Wachterl, a short hike past Taubensee brings you back to your starting point at Hintersee.
