On the fifth stage of the Berchtesgaden Summit Trail, you’ll cross the Reiteralm plateau from Hintersee and then descend to Wachterl.
You’ll start at the bus stop at Hintersee and begin by hiking toward the Klausbachtall valley. Then follow the signs up to Halsalm. After a challenging climb to Halsgrube, take the Böslsteig, which leads you steeply—and in some places along secured sections—up the eastern flank of Reiter Alm. Mountain pines line your path up to the Steinbergrücken ridge. There, you’ll enjoy your first view of the plateau. Through the Steinberggasse, you’ll descend to the alpine meadows surrounding Neue Traunsteiner Hütte. From the hut, you’ll hike through a shady forest, past ancient Swiss stone pines. The Wachterlsteig trail winds steadily up and down until you reach the Wachterl hiking parking lot.
