The alternative route for Stage 2 of the Berchtesgaden Summit Trail takes you from Wasseralm via Blaue Lacke and Niederbrunnsulzen to Kärlingerhaus.

Start at Wasseralm and climb uphill through the forest, passing the hunting hut along the way. Higher up, the trail leads through open stands of larch trees to the base of Hocheck. Larch trees are exceptionally well adapted to the harsh climate and winter storms at this elevation. Blaue Lacke, a small mountain pond fed only by snowmelt and rainwater, is believed to be the highest body of water in Germany. Continue climbing until you reach Lange Gasse, which leads you up to Niederbrunnsulzen, the highest point of this stage. From there, follow the trail to the saddle known as Totes Weib, then follow the signs downhill to Kärlingerhaus.
