Berchtesgaden Valley Trail

78 kilometers in four stages

The Berchtesgaden Valley Trail takes you through all five communities of the valley in four unforgettable day-long stages. Your journey begins at Berchtesgaden train station—and not long after, you reach your first highlight: the scenic footpath to Lake Königssee, awarded Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail, leading you to the world-famous lake framed by steep mountain walls.

In Ramsau, you’ll circle the base of the Hochkalter massif and take in the tranquil beauty of Lake Hintersee. Along the way, you’ll want to grab your camera—the parish church of Ramsau is one of the most photographed landmarks in the Berchtesgaden Alps. From there, the sun-drenched Soleleitungsweg with its sweeping panoramic views leads you toward Bischofswiesen. A detour up to Kastensteinerwandalm is well worth it—the view alone is unforgettable.

Back in Berchtesgaden, you wander through the historic center lined with proud, centuries-old homes. On the final stage, you discover the pilgrimage church of Maria Gern, one of the region’s most iconic postcard scenes, followed by the ornate Rococo church in Ettenberg. The trail then takes you through the dramatic Almbachklamm gorge down to Marktschellenberg. From there, you hike back toward Berchtesgaden—finishing your journey fulfilled, inspired, and rich with lasting impressions.
