Starting at the Herz-Jesu Church in Bischofswiesen, this hike takes you over the Kastensteinerwand and along the Maximiliansreitweg, past Aschauerweiher to Berchtesgaden. The route takes you through the historic center of Berchtesgaden, past the AlpenCongress to Hotel Kronprinz, and on via the Soleleitungssteg and Doktorberg to the Weinfeldweg.

Before you start your hike, it’s worth taking a look inside the Herz-Jesu Church to see the impressive statue of Christ. Afterward, you’ll hike up the winding Maximiliansreitweg trail to Kastensteinerwand. Once you reach the top, the view opens up to the mountains and far down into the valley. Back on Maximiliansreitweg, the fitness trail gets you moving before you stroll through the Rostwald forest, over Doktorberg, and down into the historic center of Berchtesgaden. Another highlight of the tour awaits you at the Kirchleitn Chapel. At Schlossplatz, discover the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) and Berchtesgaden Royal Palace. Your route then takes you to the Old Cemetery and along the Sonnenpromenade to the Soleleitungssteg. Follow this path to Oberweinfeld.

Directions

From Herz-Jesu Church, walk through the Datzmannsiedlung neighborhood to the Maximilianreitweg. Keep left and follow the switchbacks uphill to Kastensteinerwand. At the top, keep right and follow the Kastensteinerwandweg downhill until you rejoin the Maximilianreitweg. Follow the sign toward Aschauer Weiher, continue along the fitness trail, and head toward Rostwald and Doktorberg.

From here, follow the signs to Kapelle der Seligpreisungen (Chapel of the Beatitudes). Take the Meditationsweg (meditation trail) downhill to Nonntal, then continue past the parish church and the Stiftskirche (Collegiate Church) through Berchtesgaden’s historic center to AlpenCongress. Behind AlpenCongress, keep right, pass Alter Friedhof (Old Cemetery), and follow the Sonnenpromenade to Luitpoldpark. From there, walk uphill toward Hotel Kronprinz. Shortly before the hotel, turn onto the Soleleitungssteg and follow the wooden walkway to Oberweinfeldlehen. This is where Stage 3 ends.
