On the challenging fourth stage of the Berchtesgaden Valley Trail, you'll hike through stunning landscapes and discover historic sights along the way.

The route leads from Kapelle der Seligpreisungen (Chapel of the Beatitudes) through the Gerner Klamm gorge and via Dürrlehen to Theresienklause, then continues via Ettenberg to the center of Marktschellenberg. From there, hike past Kugelmühle, Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, and Watzmann Therme. Finally, follow the Königsseer Ache to Berchtesgaden train station, where the Berchtesgaden Valley Trail comes to an end.

Directions

Start at Kirchleitn Chapel and hike uphill to Maria Gern. Follow Gerer Bach creek until you turn toward Dürrlehen. Sure-footedness is required here as the trail descends in switchbacks to Theresienklause in the Almbachklamm gorge. On the other side, climb up to the Ettenberg pilgrimage church, a jewel of Rococo architecture.

Follow Ettenberger Straße to Marktschellenberg, then continue toward Berchtesgaden. Once you see the signs for Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, your destination is not far away. Before reaching Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof (train station), you can stop for a swim at Watzmann Therme. Your final stage of the Berchtesgaden Valley Trail ends at the train station.
