Regenalm

A gem in Berchtesgaden National Park
  • im Nationalpark Berchtesgaden

Regenalm is usually known only to those who hike the challenging Kaunersteig trail from Saletalm at Lake Königssee.

From Gotzenalm, you can reach the alpine pasture hut in about 30 minutes on foot. Regenalm is situated in a stunning location and offers an impressive panoramic view of the mountains—from Steinernes Meer to Hochkönig and on to Watzmann.

Alpine pasture in Berchtesgaden National Park

Regenalm is owned by Berchtesgaden National Park. The alpine hut at Regenalm is what’s known as a “Rundumkaser.” This means that the herdsman’s living quarters are located in the center of the hut, while the rest of the space is used as a barn. Today, the entrance area serves as a workspace and sleeping area. In the living room, you’ll still find a cauldron and a stove from days gone by. These days, you’d really only find a Kaser with such furnishings in a museum.

Furthermore, on the “Reng”—as the locals call the Regenalm—there is still a hunting lodge that King Maximilian II Joseph had built during his reign from 1848 to 1864. Today, the lodge serves as a work cabin for the National Park’s forest workers.
