Nature hiking with kids: Wichtelweg discovery trail to Zinkenkogel

The Wichtelweg to Zinkenstüberl is a family-friendly themed hiking trail along Rossfeld Panorama Road. Here, you can combine nature exploration, exercise, and fun with your children. Along the approximately four-kilometer trail, there are seven stations where your children can complete challenges. At Zinkenstüberl at the end of the trail, a small reward awaits, along with the chance to take a well-deserved break with food and drinks. There’s also a small petting zoo with rabbits and the resident pig, “Herkules.” Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views and find plenty of places to sit. From May through October, the Wichtelweg is a great  choice for a family outing.

    Directions

Your starting point is the free parking lot at the North toll station on Rossfeld Panorama Road. From here, follow the well-marked, wide gravel trail as it climbs gently uphill. After just a few minutes, you’ll reach the first of seven Wichtel stations, where fun activities keep kids entertained along the way.

The trail winds through patches of forest and across open mountain meadows, with beautiful views opening up time and again over the Berchtesgaden valley and the surrounding mountains. Benches and rest areas along the way invite you to take a break. The steady climb is manageable but does require some stamina, with a total elevation gain of about 186 meters.

After about an hour at a leisurely pace, you’ll reach Zinkenstüberl at 1,323 meters. Stop for a relaxing break and enjoy regional specialties. There’s also a small petting zoo with rabbits and Herkules, the resident pig. Kids who complete all the stations along Wichtelweg can look forward to a small reward.

For a little extra adventure, take a short detour to the summit of 1,336-meter Zinkenkopf, also known as Zinkenkogel in Austria.

Return to the parking lot along the same route. Allow about two and a half hours for the entire hike, including breaks and time at the activity stations.
