Across 29 bridges and footbridges, up over 320 stone steps, and through a tunnel blasted into the rock, you’ll experience the deep Almbachklamm gorge up close, while the crystal-clear torrent rushes down into the valley at your feet. At the end of the gorge, you’ll first hike along an easy trail—secured in places—that still requires some physical stamina. Later, you’ll follow a hiking trail to Gasthaus Dürrlehen in Maria Gern.

Directions

The adventure-filled hike through the Almbachklamm gorge in Marktschellenberg takes you on a long, enchanting route through the wildly romantic gorge. At the entrance to Almbachklamm, you’ll discover Germany’s oldest marble ball mill, where chunks of marble have been ground into polished spheres since 1683. Crossing 29 bridges and walkways, climbing more than 320 stone steps, and passing through a tunnel blasted into the rock, you’ll experience the deep gorge of the Almbach up close as the crystal-clear mountain stream rushes down the valley beneath your feet. At Theresienklause, where the trail through Almbachklamm ends, turn left toward Maria Gern for this variation. Via Gasthaus  Dürrlehen, a restaurant with a large sun terrace, you’ll hike through the forest back into the gorge and return to your starting point.
