Below the Deutsche Alpenstraße, between Inzell, Weißbach, and Schneizlreuth, the Weißbach River winds its way through a majestic gorge—the Weißbach Gorge. On your hike through the gorge, stairs and footbridges lead you past natural pools and right up close to the roar of the waterfalls.

Be sure to wear sturdy shoes on your hike through the Weißbachschlucht gorge. Also keep in mind that you might get splashed here and there along the waterfalls.

Tip: Alternative routes available
If you’re still up for it and have time, you can continue this hike and follow the signs for “Rund um den Falkenstein” - an easy, flat hike, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Or you can hike to the source of the Weißbach, which is about a 20-minute walk from Zwing.

Directions

Hiking through the Weißbachschlucht gorge is a memorable experience. Behind Gasthaus Stabach, follow Sägmühlweg, pass the sawmill, and continue through a small riverside meadow. The trail then leads through shady spruce forest until you reach a meadow. Here, you can either turn left and climb to Gasthaus Mauthäusl or keep right and head directly into the Weißbachschlucht gorge. The massive rock faces and striking formations carved into the stone by the rushing water immediately catch your eye.

The hike through the Weißbachschlucht gorge is generally safe, but requires extra care under wet conditions. The gorge is not accessible for hiking in winter.

At the end of the gorge, you’ll reach a small shelter. From here, you can take the steep trail to the left and continue toward Lake Thumsee and Bad Reichenhall. Alternatively, continue straight ahead to reach the village of Schneizlreuth in a short time. From there, you can extend your hike through the Saalach valley.
