The tour starts at the parking lot below Maria Gern Church. From here, follow the quiet road uphill to the right until you rejoin the main road. Continue along the main road to the former Gasthaus Bachgütl. Shortly after the inn, turn left where the public road ends. Continue steeply uphill on the paved road for about 15 minutes, passing beautifully situated Stiedlerlehen, until you reach Untersberghof.
At the gate, keep left and follow the signs along the forest and meadow trail toward Obergern until you reach Stadlerhof. Back on a paved road, continue along a mostly level stretch with beautiful views to Ascherlehen, the highest point of the hike at around 1,040 meters. From here, descend steeply on a wide forest trail to Planitschlehen. Follow the paved road for a short distance until the trail toward Bischofswiesen / Berchtesgaden branches off to the left, leading first to Klapflehen.
Continue along the paved road, turn left again, and descend to Dietfeld, where you reach the main road. Keep left until the road forks, then head toward Maria Gern. Along the way, you can stop for refreshments at Café Etzerschlößl or Café Etzerfelsen, which sits above the road and is reached via a footbridge.
At the sharp right-hand bend, leave the road to the left and follow the marked trail through the shady Gerer Klamm gorge. Several stairways, wide sections of trail, and a total of five bridges—the longest measuring 18 meters—lead you back to your starting point. From here, you can climb up to Maria Gern Church on the right.
