Directions

Grünstein via ferrata offers several route options to the summit, giving both experienced via ferrata climbers and beginners on the rock a route suited to their abilities through the steep rock faces above Lake Königssee.

  1. “Isidor-Steig”: This is the easiest of the three routes. While it isn’t consistently steep, it does cross several steep rock faces. In between, grassy sections give you a chance to catch your breath and enjoy the impressive mountain scenery. The easier sections in particular offer spectacular views down to Lake Königssee and up toward Watzmann. The via ferrata is named after Isidor Grassl (Grünauerer) from Schönau, who had established a route along a similar line years earlier, parts of which were marked with a thin steel cable.
  2. “Variante”: Difficulty D
  3. “Räuberleiter”: In the upper section of Grünstein, Räuberleiter joins Variante below the suspension bridge. Variante then joins Isidor-Steig at the suspension bridge. Difficulty D/E
  4. “Intersport-Renoth-Gipfelwand”: Since summer 2013, there has been another option for reaching the summit: “Intersport-Renoth-Gipfelwand,” just below the summit, features overhanging sections rated D+ to E.

To reach the starting point, follow the path along the bobsled and luge track.

The “Räuberleiter” route is currently closed.
