Laxersteig is an extension of Schützensteig on Vogelstein, better known as “Kleiner Jenner.” While Schützensteig is designed for families and via ferrata beginners, Laxersteig offers a challenge for more experienced climbers, with a sustained difficulty rating of C.

The Laxersteig’s namesake and patron

Laxersteig is named after the longtime chairman of SC Grünstein Klettersteigs e. V., Stefan Lochner, known as “Laxera,” and his cousin Anton Wein, known as “Laxer Tonei,” who died in a climbing accident on Mawenzi-Kilimanjaro in February 1986.

The patron of Laxersteig is Berchtesgaden-based brand ambassador Thomas Huber, the older of the Huberbuam brothers.

For experienced climbers only! Via ferrata routes are suitable only for highly experienced mountaineers who are absolutely surefooted, have a head for heights, and are in excellent physical condition. Via ferrata routes are closed during the winter months and, depending on snow conditions, may not be accessible until May.

Directions

Laxersteig is rated C for almost its entire length, with challenging and sometimes exposed climbing sections. At the transition to Schützensteig, which is rated A/B, you can either exit Laxersteig or continue along Schützensteig all the way to the top. Allow about one hour to complete Laxersteig. For the entire route in combination with Schützensteig, plan on about two to two and a half hours.

Several distinctive sections have been given memorable names. Right after “Einstiegswandl” and the first pillar, the route climbs vertically upward. “Lärchentraverse” offers a chance to catch your breath while enjoying beautiful mountain views. “Sakrisches Eck” and “Steil bergauf” are exposed in places and offer spectacular photo opportunities. After the “Grand Finale,” you’re already on the extension of Schützensteig. The elevation gain is only about 100 meters, but don’t underestimate the traverses.
