A walk that turns into an immersive nature experience: through glistening ice landscapes between Hochkalter and Reiter Alm to the wildlife feeding area in the Klausbachtal valley in Berchtesgaden National Park.
Winter hike to the wildlife feeding station
Your starting point is the "Hirschbichlstraße" parking lot at Hintersee. From there, you’ll hike on a nearly flat path with only a slight incline to the wildlife feeding area. Then it’s time to wait and watch with anticipation: the red deer emerge silently from the forest and approach the feeding troughs in the clearing. In some winters, you can spot up to 50 red deer here. A newly designed, accessible viewing platform gives you a great view of the animals.
If you’d like, you can also take a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the wildlife feeding area. A horse-drawn sleigh can accommodate up to 12 people. The ride from the Klausbachhaus National Park Information Center to the wildlife feeding area takes about 30 minutes.
Between Hochkalter and Reiter Alm
For the return trip, you can choose a forest trail different from the one you took on the way there, adding some variety to your hike. The entire trail is cleared in winter, is almost completely flat, and is therefore ideal for families with children. If you’d like, you can round out the tour with a walk around Lake Hintersee or stop for a bite to eat at a tavern by the lake.
