Feeding wild animals in winter

The wildlife feeding area in Klausbachtal in Berchtesgaden National Park is around 45 hectares in size. Around 65 red deer currently live here. The cows, deer and calves come to Klausbachtal on their own in winter, as they can easily survive the winter there. As soon as the rangers of the national park are of the opinion that all the red deer are in the deer feeding enclosure, the gates are closed. Red deer are migratory animals and would actually migrate to the riparian forest in winter. However, as this is not possible in the Berchtesgadener Land region, the deer are fed. As soon as spring arrives, the 25 gates are opened and the red deer return to the wild.

Hike or carriage ride into the Klausbach Valley

The hiking trail into the Klausbach Valley is cleared in winter and has hardly any inclines. It is also possible to take a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the game feeding station. Information is available at the Klausbachhaus, the national park information point at the entrance to the Klausbach Valley.

The Klausbach Valley: a barrier-free model region

For geographical reasons, the Klausbach Valley has a relatively flat valley floor at the entrance. The level hiking trails consist of firm sand and run along the Klausbach stream. The circular routes can be varied according to preference using wheelchair-accessible cul-de-sacs. Cattle grates on the paths are designed to be wheelchair accessible with transition plates. There are benches to rest on every 200m or so. There are various barrier-free hiking trails in the Klausbach Valley. For example, 2 or 4 km long paths lead to the game feeding station, which is equipped with a wheelchair-accessible viewing platform. However, you can also choose a slightly longer path (6 km; 6 - 10 % gradient in places). This path leads to a barrier-free suspension bridge over the Klausbach, which is unique in the Alpine region. If this route is too challenging, in summer it is possible to take the public Alm-Erlebnis bus on a road through the valley. The low-floor bus stops at several stops, e.g. also at the suspension bridge, the Bindalm or the Hirschbichl Pass (RVO timetable).
