SalzAlpenSteig: Etappe 9

On the ninth stage of the SalzAlpenSteig, we hike along historic trails, following the Soleleitungsweg through the bird sanctuary above Ramsau all the way to Engedey. From there, the trail climbs steeply uphill to the Grünsteinhütte, a stunning viewpoint in the Berchtesgaden Alps, with Lake Königssee stretching out below in deep blue.

The ninth stage of the SalzAlpenSteig follows the historic salt pipeline trail through the bird sanctuary above Ramsau to Engedey. The steep ascent to the Grünstein Hut offers a breathtaking view of the Berchtesgaden Alps and the deep-blue Königssee. The route follows the old salt pipelines at the foot of the Gröllberg and Söldenköpfl and rewards hikers with magnificent views of the Hochkalter, the northernmost Blaueis Glacier in the Alps, and the Watzmann, one of Germany’s highest mountains. The Tote Mann, a mountain with a curious legend, towers to the north. The ascent to the Grünstein, a well-known panoramic mountain, can be made via several via ferratas. The route leads along forest roads and trails to the Grünstein Hut, from where another magnificent view of the Berchtesgadener Land is possible. The hike ends in Schönau at the world-famous Königssee, where boats depart for St. Bartholomä and the lively pedestrian zone invites you to take a stroll. The ninth stage concludes with a stunning view of Lake Königssee, Mount Jenner, the Göll peaks, and the Kehlstein with the Kehlsteinhaus. Sturdy footwear is recommended for this moderately difficult hike, which is ideal from April through October.
