A beautiful panoramic hike following the trail of salt from Königssee to the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine, across the foothills of the Rossfeld and the German-Austrian border to Bad Dürrnberg.

The tenth stage of the SalzAlpenSteig takes us from Königssee at the foot of the Watzmann, through Schönau am Königssee, along the Königsseeache, and on to Berchtesgaden. Following the paths of historic salt mining, we head up the hill east of Berchtesgaden toward the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine (the oldest active salt mine in Europe), where magnificent panoramic views open up before us time and again. After a strenuous mountain stage, we hike across the foothills of the Rossfeld to Bad Dürrnberg, dotted with Celtic graves, where salt was already being mined from the so-called Haselgebirge in prehistoric times. Even today, the salt mine and the Celtic Museum (site of Celtic graves and traces of settlements) bear witness to the former salt mining in Bad Dürrnberg. Adorned with a pilgrimage church made of red marble and offering a magnificent view of Hallein and the legendary Barmsteine, the town invites you to linger!
