From State Road 2103, drive toward the Anger village square and park at the Scheiter parking lot. From there, head toward the village square and turn left onto Klosterweg. Follow the trail via Ölberg directly to Lake Höglwörth. After your loop around the lake, warm up with a hot drink at Gasthaus Klosterwirt. For the return trip, follow Klosterweg for about 600 meters, then turn left toward the sports field. At Wolfgruber Bakery, turn right onto Pfaffendorfstraße and follow it uphill to the village square. There, you can stop for food and refreshments at Pizzeria La Forchetta or Landgasthaus Goberg before walking about five minutes back to the Scheiter parking lot.
Höglwörth: The Pearl of Rupertiwinkel
Within sight of Anger lies the true gem of Höglwörth. It may not be one of the grand and opulent abbeys, but its setting reveals the care with which the monks chose this beautiful spot in the early 11th century.
The former Augustinian monastery sits romantically on a small peninsula in the lake, framed by dark forests and mountains and surrounded by a peaceful rural landscape. Inside the church, elegant stucco decoration created around 1765 by Benedikt Zöpf complements ceiling paintings by Franz Nikolaus Streicher. The two artists also worked together at St. Peter’s in Salzburg. A highlight is the altarpiece depicting the Transfiguration of Christ, painted by the Sienese master Francesco Vanni around 1600. Paintings, stucco, and altars come together in the light-filled interior to create an extraordinary sense of harmony and space.
The monastery’s enclosed courtyard is equally impressive, paved with rounded cobblestones about the size of a fist. A carved face spouts water into a marble fountain crowned by a statue of St. John of Nepomuk and decorated with a coat of arms featuring crossed keys. On the half-hour walk around Lake Höglwörth, you’ll enjoy the finest view of the former monastery from the opposite shore.
