Together with the collegiate church, the Royal Palace of Berchtesgaden forms an imposing ensemble and is still the residential palace and summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Who could blame Franz Duke of Bavaria with this location in the middle of Berchtesgaden!

Berchtesgaden Castle, the summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty after 1810, was once the center of a small ecclesiastical state. Founded around 1102/1105, the Augustinian canons' monastery was subsequently granted imperial immediacy with the granting of blood jurisdiction (1294) and in 1559 acquired the status of a princely provostry. Together with the collegiate church, Berchtesgaden Royal Palace forms an imposing ensemble and is still the residential palace and summer residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Who could blame Franz Duke of Bavaria with this location right in the historic center of Berchtesgaden!

Residential palace, art collection, Rehmuseum, rose garden

The monastery remained the residence of the sovereigns until secularization in 1803. The entire complex is the result of building activity that lasted until the late 18th century. Crown Prince Rupprecht of Bavaria lived here with his family from 1922 to 1933 and furnished the palace with his art collections. Today, Berchtesgaden Royal Palace is still the residential palace of the Wittelsbach dynasty and serves as a secondary residence for Franz Duke of Bavaria. It is home to valuable art collections and the deer collection of HRH Duke Albrecht of Bavaria! Depending on the weather, you can also visit a small but very pretty rose garden. The Royal Palace is not only worth a visit on rainy days, on sunny days the light-flooded rooms and the rose garden of the palace are particularly impressive.

The Rehmuseum

The Rehmuseum with the collection of Duke Albrecht of Bavaria (1905-1996) has found its home in the former stables of the Royal Castle of Berchtesgaden. The total of 1,290 buck skulls, 590 goat and fawn skulls and 3,425 shedding rods, mainly from the Weichselboden hunting ground in Styria, were housed in the Grünau hunting lodge from 1984 to 2005 and have now been presented in their entirety and in a new concept in the Rehmuseum since the 100th birthday of Duke Albrecht of Bavaria in 2005. The collection is now accessible to the public and available for scientific study. The exhibition deals with the results of decades of research carried out by Duke Albrecht of Bavaria in his hunting grounds. He was able to prove that inadequate living conditions are the cause of poor game development. If the game is adequately nourished, there is no browsing damage. Duke Albrecht of Bavaria received an honorary doctorate from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich for his research.
