Even though Königstalalm is just a short distance from the popular Jenner area, you'll find peace and seclusion here.
Only a handful of hikers and mountaineers—most of them locals—make the journey to this secluded alpine pasture, making it the perfect place to enjoy the quiet side of the mountains.
Königstal in the Jenner region
Nestled at the foot of Windschartenkopf and Rotspielscheibe, Königstalalm lies in the heart of the Königssee alpine pastures within Berchtesgaden National Park. The quickest way to reach Königstalalm is from the Hinterbrand parking area. Follow the Königsweg trail past the Jennerbahn mid-station, then continue to Königsbachalm, where the clearly marked path branches off toward Königstalalm.
The final stretch leads through the forest below the alpine pasture, climbing a very steep hillside on a series of switchbacks. If you're coming from Schneibsteinhaus, you can also follow a faint trail favored by locals that descends directly to Königstalalm.
Two alpine huts at Königstalalm
At Königstalalm, you’ll discover two alpine huts, known locally as Kaser. One of them, Stangerkaser, is a Rundumkaser, a rare circular-style alpine hut dating back to 1511. This distinctive style of alpine hut was once common but is rarely seen today. Today, Stangerkaser serves only as a shelter for the cattle and no longer as living quarters for the alpine herders. The second hut, Stockerkaser, is open with simple seasonal service during the summer. For the farmers of Stockerlehen, Königstalalm is their high alpine pasture. In early and late summer, the cattle spend their time on the lower alpine pasture at Wasserfallalm on Jenner. Near Stockerkaser, you’ll also find the beautiful alpine cross.
