Rustic Rossfeld-Skihütte on Rossfeld Panorama Road is surrounded by gentle hiking terrain in summer and sits right next to the Rossfeld ski area in winter.

Rossfeld-Skihütte is located at an elevation of 1,551 meters directly on Rossfeld Panorama Road, Germany’s highest panoramic road open year-round. Just above the hut, you’ll find the summit cross at 1,600 meters, where the Panorama Loop Trail begins.

History of Rossfeld-Skihütte

The history of Rossfeld-Skihütte began in 1927, when the Schellenberg Ski Club and Salzburg Ski Club jointly leased Rottenkaser as a ski hut. At the time, it was the only remaining alpine hut on Rossfeld. From December 1929, the Schellenberg Ski Club ran the hut on its own. With as many as 800 skiers visiting on weekends, the club decided in 1933/34 to build its own ski hut on Rossfeld. The new hut opened in December 1934, with the official opening celebration taking place in March 1935. Anna Seidl was the hut’s first leaseholder.

When Rossfeldstraße was built in 1938, a parking lot was added below the ski hut, making it easier to bring in supplies. Rossfeld-Skihütte remained open until mid-1944, when it was used to accommodate an anti-aircraft unit, with the ski club receiving rental income.

After the war, in 1945, the ski hut was completely looted. By 1947, however, it was back in operation under its new leaseholder, Maria Heiß. Between 1953 and 1960, and again in 1972/73, the kitchen, main hut room, and club room were renovated, and a dining room was added to accommodate growing demand.

The Fegg-Höllbacher family: operators of Rossfeld-Skihütte

Since June 2026, the Fegg-Höllbacher family has been operating Rossfeld-Skihütte. The family is already well known in Berchtesgaden-Oberau through Alpinhotel Berchtesgaden. Located at an elevation of almost 1,000 meters in Oberau, the hotel offers 18 rooms with 44 beds. The family also has strong ties to alpine winter sports through the ski school at Obersalzberg, which offers ski lessons with personal attention and well-organized instruction.

Rossfeld family ski area

In winter, the Rossfeld ski lifts start right outside the door. Regular snow clearing also keeps the roads in excellent condition. After an action-packed day in the snow, settle into one of the ski hut’s rustic dining rooms for a cozy meal and a well-earned break.
