Afternoon at the Litzlalm

Litzlalm

Alpine pasture hut and Jausenstation in Pinzgau, Austria
  • Open today
  • Weißbach bei Lofer

Located not far from Hirschbichl in the Pinzgau region of Austria, Litzlalm offers a magnificent panoramic view of the striking Reiter Alm massif. You can reach the Jausenstation on a hike or a mountain bike tour through the Klausbachtal valley.

The pastures of Litzlalm and the Litzlwiese, covering an area of about two square kilometers, lie at an elevation of between 1,300 and 1,500 meters. During the summer months, eight alpine farming families (four from St. Martin bei Lofer, three from Weißbach bei Lofer, and one from Bischofswiesen) share this area with up to 90 cattle.

In the center of Litzlalm is a Jausenstation. This is the Austrian term for mountain restaurants that offer light meals and snacks—known as a “Jause.”

Thanks to its magnificent location and beautiful views of the surrounding mountains—especially the Mühlsturzhörner peaks of the Reiter Alm massif—Litzlalm has served as a filming location for numerous regional films and TV series. Among other things, parts of the 11th season of the TV series “Der Bergdoktor” were filmed here. One of the upper alpine pasture huts served as Uncle Ludwig’s hut in the series.

Mountain bike tour to Litzlalm

The bike tour to Litzlalm is a classic among short-distance mountain bike routes in the Berchtesgadener Land. The tour takes you from Hintersee in Ramsau along a narrow paved road through the Klausbachtal valley. To the right, the bizarre Mühlsturzhörner (Ramsau Dolomites) are a sight to behold; to the left, Hochkalter and the Hocheis massif soar into the sky. At the end of the valley lie Bindalm, Hirschbichl, and, above them, Litzlalm. The Jausenstation at Litzlalm and the Gasthaus Hirschbichl are very popular stops for cyclists. The return trip follows the same route.

Don’t miss the short detour to Bindalm. Please note: Bicycles are only permitted to ride uphill on this access road. Riding down from the Hirschbichl side is prohibited.

Hiking trail and ALMErlebnisBUS

The hike to Litzlalm is also well worth the effort. The hike takes you from Hintersee through the Klausbachtal valley to Hirschbichl. There, the trail to Litzlalm branches off from the old pass road and leads along a hiking trail to the alpine pasture. You can easily reach Hirschbichl on the ALMErlebnisBUS and hike from there to Litzlalm in about an hour.

Hiking tip: Litzlkogel

Rising above Litzlalm, Litzlkogel is a rewarding summit that's just a short hike away. At the top, you'll be rewarded with even more spectacular views, along with the peace and seclusion that make this hidden spot so special.
