Big or small, laid-back or full of energy—there’s something here for every kind of dog.

That said, heading into the mountains with your dog takes a bit of preparation. Not every route suits every breed—it makes a difference whether you’re out with a dachshund or a high-energy hunting dog like a Gordon Setter or Münsterländer. Take it step by step. Help your dog build confidence on uneven terrain, learn to navigate tricky sections, and pace its energy.

Leash law in the national park

Berchtesgaden National Park exists to protect a truly unique natural landscape. When you’re out exploring here, keep that in mind: take your trash with you and keep your dog on a leash to protect the wildlife living there. On alpine pastures, make sure your dog keeps a safe distance from grazing animals—curiosity or fear can quickly turn into a dangerous situation.

In general, know your dog well and only let it off leash if it responds reliably to your commands. Be mindful of other people on the trail—some may feel uneasy around dogs, even if most dogs show little interest in passing hikers… unless there’s a tempting snack involved.

Many dogs love the freedom to roam. Outside the national park, on quieter trails, and with good obedience, there’s usually nothing standing in the way of letting your dog run free.

Muzzle requirement for dogs on Königssee boats

Dogs are required to wear a muzzle on all boats operating on Lake Königssee—regardless of breed or size. The only exception: guide dogs and service dogs.

Fighting dogs are not permitted
Fighting dogs (as defined by the Ordinance on Dogs with Increased Aggressiveness and Dangerousness dated July 10, 1992) are generally not permitted.
