History and technology of the Untersbergbahn
The Untersbergbahn opened in 1961 as an aerial tramway with two cabins traveling back and forth between the stations. Since then, the cable car has carried passengers from the valley station in Grödig to the summit station below Geiereck, climbing 1,320 vertical meters in just eight and a half minutes.
Beyond this impressive elevation gain, the Untersbergbahn boasts some remarkable figures. At its highest point, the cabin travels 286 meters above the ground. The unsupported cable span between the valley station and the first support tower stretches 1.548 kilometers. Each of the two cabins can carry up to 50 passengers, allowing the Untersbergbahn to transport up to 300 people per hour to Untersberg.
